Is Dungeon Settlers Steam Deck Compatible?

Valve rates Dungeon Settlers Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. The four issues Valve flagged, what the developer says about support, and whether it is a good handheld fit.

Yes, with caveats. Valve has reviewed Dungeon Settlers for Steam Deck and given it a Playable rating — not the higher Verified rating. The developer announced this on August 23, 2026.

Playable means it runs and you can get through it, but you will hit friction Valve thought was worth flagging.

What Valve flagged

IssueWhat it means in practice
Shows non-Deck controller iconsPrompts may tell you to press a key or a mouse button that is not on the Deck
Text entry needs the on-screen keyboardYou have to summon it yourself (STEAM + X) rather than it appearing when a field is focused
Some in-game text is smallA colony sim on a 7-inch screen; expect to squint at tooltips and lists
Native resolution not set by defaultIt supports the Deck's resolution but you may have to select it manually in settings

None of these are crashes or missing features. They are the ordinary gap between a game designed for a mouse and a handheld with a trackpad.

What the developer says

They are direct about it: the game may be playable on Steam Deck, but they do not officially support the device at this time and cannot guarantee an optimal experience. They have also said they are positively considering broader Steam Deck support as Early Access development continues, without committing to plans or a timeline.

Translated: it works, it is not a priority yet, and it may improve during the estimated two-year Early Access run.

There is no native Linux build

The Steam listing covers Windows and macOS. There is no Linux version, so on a Deck the game runs through Proton, Valve's compatibility layer. That is the normal path for most Deck titles and is what Valve's Playable rating was awarded against — you do not need to configure anything for it.

Is it a good fit for the Deck anyway?

Genre-wise, better than you might expect. It is a real-time game you can pause, which suits a handheld far better than something demanding constant precision. Settlement management is mostly deliberate clicking rather than reflexes.

The honest counterweight is the small text. Colony sims lean on dense tooltips, resource lists and stat panels, and a 7-inch screen is unforgiving of that. If you have found other colony sims uncomfortable on the Deck, this one will probably feel the same until the developer revisits UI scaling.

Before you buy for the Deck

  • The rating is Playable, not Verified, and it was awarded against a pre-launch build.
  • Early Access ratings can change as the game changes. Check the store page again after major updates.
  • If you mainly want a Deck game, wait for post-launch impressions. If you want the game and the Deck is a bonus, the caveats above are all minor.

The system requirements page covers the desktop specification, and the FAQ answers the other pre-purchase questions.
