Dungeon Settlers Research Guide – Buildings & Equipment Unlocks

What research does in Dungeon Settlers, how unlocks gate buildings and equipment, and how to decide what to work towards next.

Research in Dungeon Settlers unlocks buildings and equipment. It is how a settlement raises its own ceiling — and it competes for the same output that feeds settlers and equips expeditions.

What research actually does

Two categories of unlock are confirmed:

  • Buildings. New structures for the settlement, extending what you can produce or how well you can produce it.
  • Equipment. Gear your party can take underground.

Both matter for the same reason: the settlement and the expedition are one system. Research that improves production eventually improves what your party carries, and research that unlocks equipment is worthless if you cannot supply what it needs.

Ordering is the real decision

Since research draws on settlement output, the question is never only "is this unlock good?" but "is this unlock good next?" Two failure modes:

  • Researching ahead of your supply. Unlocking something you cannot yet produce spends output for a capability you cannot use.
  • Researching broadly. Spreading progress across several branches delays the first thing that would actually change a run.

A reasonable habit: pick one unlock that changes the next expedition, work the prerequisites in order, and only then reassess.

Mapping a path

The research planner is built for that. Add the unlocks you can see in your own build, mark what you already have, connect the prerequisites, and pick a target — it returns the outstanding steps in an order you can actually work through, and totals any costs you entered.

It ships empty on purpose. Research costs and prerequisite chains are build-specific, and a fabricated tree would send people down paths that do not exist. Manual Mode is worth more than a confident guess.

When research seems stuck

Separate the unlock you want from the condition stopping it. This is this site's planning checklist, not a tested fix or a prescribed research order:

What your current game showsWhat to recordHow to use the planner
An unfinished prerequisiteThe exact node name and its own prerequisitesAdd those links before selecting your target
A missing item or resourceIts exact displayed name, required amount and the stock you can actually useKeep a separate material checklist; the planner does not locate or acquire items
Requirements appear met but work does not advanceWorker state, job, displayed progress and any warningDo not invent another prerequisite; investigate the job separately

Unlocking equipment is not the same as being able to produce it. Check the recipe and workstation requirements shown in your game before spending toward an unlock. The production planner can total those ingredients once you have recorded them.

The research planner has one optional numeric Cost field per node, not a multi-resource inventory. Only total costs expressed in the same unit; adding different book types or materials together would not produce a useful budget. Keep unlike resource requirements in your separate checklist.

For jobs that stop progressing, see the settlement troubleshooting notes and the bug-report checklist. A research book mentioned in an old demo guide is not proof of a guaranteed source or drop rate in Early Access. This site has not verified a research-book farming route.

What research costs you

Settlement outputPermanent new optionsOutput diverted from food

Before committing to a long research goal, check the food calculator. Research is the easiest of the three claims on your settlement to over-fund, because its costs are invisible until something else runs out.

When verified research data is available

After we check the released build in-game, verified research nodes will appear with the game version and verification date attached, and the planner will offer them alongside Manual Mode. Anything that changes in a later patch gets relabelled rather than silently edited — see the settlement guide for how research sits alongside the rest of the settlement.
